Just north of the richest congressional district in the United States lies the poorest congressional district: the South Bronx. The gap of the wealthy and poor are felt strongly within this neighborhood of high-density homes, high crime areas, and in one of the worst school districts in the country. Only 50%-60% of high school students graduated and are typically 1-2 grade levels behind. Needless to say, the youth of the neighborhood are affected the most. The need for safer neighborhoods, better schools, and positive mentors for the youth is enormous.
On 1800 Grand Concourse, there is a derelict church that is a mirror of the neighborhood. I spend six weeks there documenting college kids from all over the country who came to clean and rebuild the church.
